Moving costs are based on volume, so naturally, we need to “declutter”. Consider donating new or clean second-hand items like clothing, shoes, and handbags to underprivileged communities. There are several organizations in Hong Kong that recycle second-hand clothes, and we’ve compiled the following list for your reference to implement eco-friendly moving!
Home Affairs Department
The "Community Used Clothes Recycling Bank Scheme" is a community participation initiative promoted by the Home Affairs Department. Launched in 2006, the program aims to facilitate the donation of old clothes to support environmental protection and charitable purposes. The recycling bins are spread across Hong Kong, Kowloon, and the New Territories. You can look for convenient locations in advance, but please note that damaged or unclean clothes, uniforms, curtains, and similar items cannot be recycled. For more details, please refer to the official website.

Friends of the Earth (HK)
The "Friends of the Earth (HK) Used Clothes Recycling Scheme" has been running since 2001 to promote the messages of "valuing resources" and "reducing waste." Recycling points are set up in housing estates, hospitals, and suitable locations to collect old clothes, shoes, handbags, etc. Currently, there are about 200 recycling points across Hong Kong. The collected clothes are shared for free with various individuals in society or resold to places in need, with proceeds used to support the organization's environmental efforts. If you have five bags or more of clothes (each bag no smaller than 24" x 12" x 28"), Friends of the Earth can also provide door-to-door collection services. For details, please refer to the official website.

Christian Action
Since 2003, Christian Action has been providing employment opportunities, on-the-job training, and retraining for the impoverished and marginalized groups in society through its "Environmental Recycling Action." Items collected from environmental activities and donations from the public and businesses are partially given to beneficiaries and sold at low prices to help the underprivileged. Christian Action regularly organizes recycling activities and has several recycling bins and door-to-door collection services. For details, please refer to the official website.

The Salvation Army
Since the 1960s, the Salvation Army has launched a material donation campaign to collect new and used clothes and supplies from society. Once donated items are transported back to the recycling program's warehouse, a professional team cleans and tests the items while sorting them. The Salvation Army offers point-to-point collection services and has donation boxes in various districts. For details, please refer to the official website.

The Conservancy Association
Since 2000, The Conservancy Association has organized old clothes recycling activities, providing recycling facilities for the public. Since 2006, it has been appointed by the Home Affairs Department as one of the management organizations for the "Community Used Clothes Recycling Bank Scheme." The recycling service covers schools, housing estates, and government-managed facilities such as parks and community centers, with all proceeds allocated for environmental education. The collected old clothes will be exported to Southeast Asian countries (like Cambodia) for reuse.
